The mission of the Friends of Rancho San Pedro is to preserve and increase community awareness of early California history as it relates to the Dominguez family, homestead adobe and the Rancho San Pedro, the first Spanish land grant in California. This is accomplished through educational programs and the operation of the Dominguez Rancho Adobe Museum.

Early California Costume Talk

Join us on April 24th at 1pm to travel through time with DeAnn Lowell as she presents clothing for work and play in the early 1800s up to the fashion of the day during the 1910 Airmeet.  Her discussion includes the most popular fashion item sold at the end of 1909 and where fashion influences came from.

Several of the actual dresses worn by the Dominguez daughters will also be on display in a never-before-seen exhibit of historic costume.

Point Fermin Lighthouse Flyover

Join us at Point Fermin on April 10th at 11am  when Point Fermin will recreate Louis Paulhan’s 1910 historic flight over the ocean.  The day will include children and adult aviation activities, flyovers, tours, parade, and a display of WWI army vehicles and Model T cars.  Bring a picnic lunch and enjoy the San Pedro Historical Society band. The first 500 children will receive a free glider plane.  The “100 Years of Aviation” exhibit created by the Dominguez Rancho Adobe Museum will be on exhibit as well.

Thaddeaus Lowe and the U.S. Balloon Corps

Join our traveling speaker series at the Cabrillo Marine Aquarium to hear about the U.S. Balloon Corp of the American Civil War that is considered the forerunner of today’s Air Force and paved the way for our nation’s future in the sky. Steven and Patrice Demory, as Professor and Leontine Loew, will present “Thaddeus Lowe and the U.S. Balloon Corps.”  They will also cover the Lowe’s post-war lives, including their residency in Pasadena, the building of the Mt. Lowe Railway and their experiences at the 1910 Air Meet.

This event will be held at the Cabrillo Marine Aquarium located at 3720 Stephen M. White Dr. in San Pedro.

Model Glider Activity for Children

Join us on March 21 when children will make paper planes reminiscent of the Bleriot, Farman and Curtiss aircraft that flew in the 1910 Air Meet and race the aircraft on the Rancho San Pedro.  Children will receive a package of simple pieces for each plane that they can put together.  They will then race the planes on the grounds behind the adobe to see who created the best flying machine.  Each contest for height, speed and accuracy will be judged by Glenn Curtiss.

March Activities

Join us in March for two wonderful activities celebrating the 1910 Los Angeles International Air Meet.

March 21st, 1pm to 3pm, Model Glider Activity
