Museum receives a joint NEH grant

The National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) has awarded the Dominguez Rancho Adobe Museum and California State University, Dominguez Hills a grant through its Landmark of American History and Culture grant program to fund two five-day professional workshops: June 13-17 and June 20-24, 2011.  These workshops will be based on the theme of “Early American History Seen through the Eyes of an Early California Family, 1780s-1920s.”

The Dominguez Rancho Adobe Museum will be working in conjunction with CSU Dominguez Hills professors, the university’s Archives and Special Collections and the Center for Service Learning, Internships and Civic Engagement (SLICE) offices to conduct a multi-disciplined, experiential learning program.

The workshops are geared toward middle-school and high school teachers, however educators from all levels are encouraged to participate in the program.  Workshops will use various renowned Los Angeles history venues like the Rancho San Pedro and the Placita Olvera.

Artifacts, working with original documents, and field trips combined with lectures will give the participating educational scholars a unique perspective of the subjectrs being addressed.  Domginuez family reenactors and dancers who specialize in historical dances of the period will bring history to life.

This will be a multi-leveled, hands-on educational experience.  Each week-long session is open to 40 teachers from across the country.  Notices about the workshops and how to apply will be sent to schools and through various education  venues beginning late December 2010.  For further information go to
