July 2010

Kite Building and Flying Activity

Children will learn to make their own kites for flying and see how well they can fly a kite on the Rancho San Pedro.  Kites were the predecessors to planes and have a historical importance in Aviation history, which will be explained.  Children will be given fabric, wood, and rubber bands and they will get to make their own flying kite.  Children will then have a chance to outdo each other in the sky by racing their kites and be judged on their design and ability by one of the Dominguez sisters.

Rancho San Pedro Transportation

Join us at the Rancho for a talk by Walter Bethel on the models of transportation that existed on the Rancho San Pedro from wagons up through early airplanes.  Walter will cover all the early transportation corridors that ran through the Rancho including early wagon trails, creation of the Alameda corridor, the 1910 Aviation meet, and early aviation.

This event will be held at the Dominguez Rancho Adobe Museum

Stained Glass Activity

As part of the Dominguez Rancho Adobe Museum’s Weekend Activity series the “Stained Glass Art” activity is an interactive art and educational workshop where people are taught how to make their own stained glass art piece.  Learn about hot air balloons as you create your own 1910 hot air balloon.  It is fun, educational, and free.

Importance of the 1910 Air Meet in Southern California

This will be a talk by Judd Grenier about the importance of the 1910 Air Meet in Southern California.  The Air Meet is considered by many historians to be the birth of the aviation and aerospace industries in Southern California.
