March Activities

Join us in March for two wonderful activities celebrating the 1910 Los Angeles International Air Meet.

March 21st, 1pm to 3pm, Model Glider Activity

Children will make paper planes reminiscent of the Bleriot, Farman and Curtiss aircraft that few in the 1910 Air Meet and race the aircraft on the Rancho San Pedro.  Children will create their planes then race them on the grounds behind the adobe to see who created the best flying machine.  Each contest for height, speed and accuracy will be judged by Glenn Curtiss.

March 27th, 1pm, talk about Thaddeaus Lowe and the U.S. Balloon Corps

The U.S. Balloon Corp of the American Civil War is considered the forerunner of today’s Air Force and paved the way for our nation’s future in the sky.  Steven and Patrice Demory, as Professor and Leontine Lowe will talk about Thaddeaus Lowe, the U.S. Balloon Corps, their post-war lives, including their residency in Pasadena, the building of Mt. Lowe Railway and their experiences at the 1910 Air Meet.  This talk will take place at the Cabrillo Marine Aquarium in San Pedro.

1910 from a First Person Perspective

Speaker Ken Veronda will take us back in time to the year 1910 and he’ll give us a snapshot of everything that was going on during the year 1910 when the Aviation Meet occurred. He will include details about the Dominguez family and their involvement in the Air Meet, the politics of the time and the world stage in 1910. And he’ll talk about this all from a 1910 first-person perspective so don’t ask questions about 1911 since the year will not have happened yet.
